If you've muted your students (or participants) during a BigBlueButton session to minimize feedback/audio issues, you may want to encourage your students to use status settings to communicate things to you quietly. 

In the left panel with the list of participants, you and your students can click on their own name and change their status. Their icon will update in response, so keep an eye out for how the user icons change.
